About us

1981

Wycombe Sharing of Faiths started in 1981 when a local family was threatened with deportation. Initially it was Muslims and Christians who got together for a vigil on behalf of that family. Soon Hindus, Sikhs and Baha'is became involved when the group was formally constituted.

2006

"Now 25 years on things have moved on: in some ways our world is very different. We are instantly aware of what is happening around the globe; international situations raise serious questions about faith and inter-faith. We have had the Gulf War, the Iraq War, Palestine, Guantanamo, 9/11, 7/7, the destruction of the shrine at Samara all of which have highlighted a destructive potential of people of faith. We also have the Government's efforts towards community cohesion, social inclusion, and seats on regional government forums specifically for a faith voice seeking to harness a creative potential of people of faith"

In Wycombe Sharing of Faiths our focus is local, because this is where we are and where we are active. Our 25 years of history represents a whole generation. We now want to connect with a new generation of active people of faith, with a new generation of thinking and ideas. We want to connect with our joint power to be creative and act co-operatively, not destructively, and not in passive hostility."

In that year Wycombe Sharing of Faiths started two new initiatives:

  • An active group of young adults 20s to 40s meeting informally: see Activities
  • A Faiths Fair in the Guildhall: see Faiths Fair

2009

The committee oversees the activities of Wycombe Sharing of Faiths: it is elected at an annual general meeting, usually held around March. The committee consists of a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and a number of other members. Each faith community is invited to nominate at least one representative to the Committee.

Currently the faiths represented on the committee are Baha'i, Christian and Muslim. If you belong to a different faith community in Wycombe, we will be glad to hear from you.

Wycombe Sharing of Faiths is affiliated to the Inter Faith Network for the UK and shares their code of conduct. Their guidelines for dialogue can be read in full by clicking on the Dialogue button on the left.
